Altit Fort is located in the District Hunza of Gilgit Baltistan (Northern Areas Pakistan). It is a very old building / fort in the area. The history of Altit Fort is very attractive and unique. Every year, thousands of tourists visited this place being a historic fort in Pakistan.
According to researchers, the Altit Fort is about 900 years old, which was built by the Mir of Hunza in the eleven century, and his family lived there until the 16th century. This fort has its roots in the Tibetan language, which means “the down side”.
After construction of this fort, it came under a family dispute between the two Royals, Prince Shah Abbas and Prince Ali Khan. Due to this dispute between the both royal family, an another fort which is known as Baltit Fort was taken by elder brother Prince Shah Abbas, whereas Altit fort remained under the hold of Prince Ali Khan.
During 1891, British Govt occupied Altit Fort but it remained an independent princely state governed by the local Mirs, which was the custom of the British occupation.
Altit fort has witnessed many historical events, including wars and alliances. The fort was restored and renovated in the 1990s. There are found several theories about their origins of Altit people, however, it is believed that brushushgi language brought by the white Huns to the area during 47 AD.
This fort is very beautiful and famous in all over the world due to its historical importance. Baltit Fort has its own importance in the history of Royal family of Gilgit Baltistan and is very popular in all over the world. This fort is located in Hunza Valley of Gilgit Baltistan. In past, this fort was the home of Ayashkutz Royal family of Hunza and remained in custody of Royal family for 700 years.
After many years, Baltit Fort came under a family dispute between the two Royals, Prince Shah Abbas and Prince Ali Khan. Due to dispute between the two royal family, an another fort known as Baltit Fort came to exist which was taken by the elder brother Prince Shah Abbas whereas Altit remained under the hold of Prince Ali Khan for many years. In 1945, the Baltit Fort was donated to Baltit Heritage Trust by Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan.
This Fort is located near an artificially trampled spur below the Ulter Glacier having a great and beautiful sightseeing of Hunza Valley and its surrounding areas. The shape of this fort is rectangular in plan with three floors and stands on a high stone plinth. In 1990, further more works carried out and became more popular historic place. This forts is consists of a single defensive timber and stone tower, which was built in the 08th century. Baltit Fort tower was improved by additional towers and linked by a single story construction consisting of small rooms and chambers.
